Job Description

Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.

Minimum Qualifications

A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.

Preferred Qualifications

A Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry or related fields is required. The primary criteria for selection of an appropriate candidate is a strong background and demonstrated proficiency in multi-step organic synthesis of complex molecules and a thorough grasp and command of modern and classic organic transformations and mechanisms. Preference will be given to individuals with experience in the syntheses of ribonucleoside analogs, although this is not a requirement.

A postdoctoral position in Synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry is available at Emory Institute for Drug Development (EIDD) for a highly motivated individual seeking to build a career in applied synthetic chemistry. The project(s) will focus on the synthesis and optimization of active antiviral compounds, and then the optimization of synthetic processes to prepare such compounds. 

Our department is dedicated to the identification and development of antiviral agents suitable for treatment and prevention of serious diseases resulted from viral infections that affect hundreds of millions of people worldwide. The successful applicants will join a research group working on different aspects of the discovery and development process for new chemical entities.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in virology, biochemistry or related field is required. Candidates with previous experience in RNA polymerase biochemistry demonstrated by good publication record should apply. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in the isolation and characterization of viral RNA dependent RNA polymerase/ polymerase complexes of RSV. Experience with viral minigenome(s) would be a plus, but not required.

The project will focus on understanding of the nucleosides use as antivirals and analysis of their antiviral resistance. Our department is dedicated to the identification and development of nucleoside-based inhibitors suitable for treatment and prevention of serious diseases resulted from viral infections that affect hundreds of millions people worldwide. The successful applicants will join a research group working on different aspects of the genetics and biochemistry of viral encoded RNA polymerases.
